paint recycle

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility located at 2224 E. Queen Creek Road has recycled latex paint available for Gilbert residents at no charge. Residents can come and pick up 25 gallons of a variety of colors including browns, whites, and shades of grey, and green.

Most painting projects, paint is purchased in larger quantities than needed. Besides disposing of the leftover paint, why not recycle it so it can be reused or reprocessed to make a high-quality, economical, recycled paint.

HHW accepts the following items: automobile and household batteries, rimless automobile tires (limit 5), paints and stains, adhesives, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, transmission and hydraulic fluids, gasoline and diesel fuel, pool chemicals, household cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs, electronic wastes such as computers, printers, monitors, televisions, etc., weed killer and pesticides. There will be a 5-gallon limit per participant on paint, oil, and antifreeze.

For FREE paint the HHW Facility is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 7:00 am - 1:00 pm. The paint is offered on a first come first served basis.

  • The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) estimates that 34 million gallons of leftover consumer paint are generated annually in the United States. PSI is working with state and local governments, manufacturers, retailers, paint recyclers, paint contractors and environmental/consumer advocates to develop leftover paint management solutions that are both financially and environmentally sustainable. Recycled paint is one such solution.

Several large paint manufacturers are currently producing recycled content paint and, with PSI, are working with other manufacturers, recyclers, and government officials to increase the market. The company's goal is to reduce the environmental impacts of managing the ever-increasing volume of leftover paint.

Recycled paints are screened and filtered, and manufacturers guarantee product performance. Using recycled-content latex paint can earn you points on the Built Green checklist, as well as potentially save you as much as 60 percent on material costs.

Candace, the recycled paint facility sounds like a great idea.  I also like your suggestion of communities using recycled paint to cover graffiti.

Great post... as a former Hazardous Materials Technician I have to tell you how important it is for people to dispose, and store their household haz-mat's properly.  It's all too often that people do improper things and all of a sudden things mix and now you have a problem...

This is something that's often neglected. Thanks for the ideas and information on what to do with these kinds of leftovers.

Brian -  Yes-- I think it's a fantastic way for us to do our part and remember how these types of hazardous waste effect our envirnoment!! We have to step up and figure out ways to protect what we do have. Now I am not a tree-hugger but this just makes sense!!  Thanks for your comments!! Spread the word or perhaps check in your community for similar agencies, I am sure they have done something similar!

Paint reuse and recycling blog
Hi Candace,

In follow-up to my voice mail, I wanted to say thanks again for posting information on paint reuse and recycling on your blog! It's very exciting to see your efforts to promote this information and I applaud your environmental consciousness. Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information on leftover paint options or if you are interested in PSI's national Paint Product Stewardship Initiative, now entering its 4th year.

I would also like to invite you to become a member of the PSI Adjunct Council, which allows businesses such as yours to find new and innovative ways to reduce the health and environmental impact from consumer products, and save money and resources. The Adjunct Council provides the benefits of shared dialogue, collaboration, and technical skill development. More information is available on the PSI website at: www.productstewardship.us/adjunctcouncil.

As you see the value in the work that we do, PSI would welcome any donations from your company. Please let me know if Gilbert Real Estate would be interested in donating to PSI and our initiatives. PSI is also part of 1% for the Planet, and can accept donations through this venue as well. Find out more at: http://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/.

Again, thank you for your efforts and I look forward to hearing from you!

Warmly,

Erin Linsky
