Here we are in December with the big holiday season closing in on us.  Soon we'll be inundated by company Christmas parties and other social gatherings and visits by family and friends from far away.  There will be lots of Christmas shopping to do and perhaps an equal amount of time spent on cooking special holiday favorites.  If you have kids, they'll soon be out of school for a couple of weeks so you'll want to spend time with them going to movies or playing games.

The point I'm getting at (as if it weren't obvious) is that there will be plenty of reasons (excuses) to "wind down" and take some time off over the next 3-4 weeks and certainly during the last week or two of December.  The problem is that in the best-case scenarion if you don't focus your energy on proper lead generation activities now and throughout the month, your March will be ugly.  We need balance in our lives and the holiday season is a great way to get a bit more balance - but if we neglect our lead generation activities, there is no balance; we would have gone to perhaps too much work to too much play.

I have often used December as a time to really focus on building my business for the next year by reviewing my business plan and goals for this year and rewriting a new one for the next year.  I also try to get out an meet as many new Realtors as possible and visit the Reatlors I'm targeting in addition to those I work with (perhaps bringing some sort of treat - thanks goes to my beautiful wife for helping me with that).  In addition to my goals for loan volume and income, I have some marketing goals to help me achieve my income goals.  These include producing two marketing videos per month, more if possible, but a minimum of two, two podcasts per month and at least one blog post per week.  To this end, I'm going to be setting up my music studio to be able to record the videos and podcasts very efficiently by setting up a system with the recording and mastering software that I use.  By having a system (template) that I can use every time, I won't have to reinvent the wheel and since it will be relatively quick and easy, I'll be more likely to do it.

Please feel free to suggest topics for the videos and podcasts.  I'm planning on providing my interpretation some of the big news items that occur as well as reporting guideline changes in addition to presenting ideas for Realtors on attracting new business and finally, doing some videos specifically to attract buyers / borrowers.  If you would like help with this, feel free to call or email - I alway love an excuse to use my music studio.  Have a great holiday AND don't forget to do your lead generation to have momentum going into 2011.

It is how you use your time, and you can juggle it all not all or nothing. When you are at Christmas parties around your area...I would not think that is wasted and not work related. If you have fun, get rested and laugh and network with others in your area, that is both work and pleasure. You get pretty boring if al work and your kids grow up not knowing who dad was..except he always work work worked. As for video, building a media center and gather more equipment. Have close to 450 videos and Santa brought me an early present with RE 20 mic, shock mount and just ordered a rack to mount the processors, gain brain compressor, audio chain enhancement. Green screen, lights...video is huge in delivering easily using eyes and ears.

Andrew - I couldn't agree more.  I hope I didn't imply that all I do is work.  I'm all for balance throughout the year.  I coach my son's basketball team and go to all of my kids' activities as well as make sure we are doing things together on a regular basis - daily.  I have always thought that if something were to happen to me, I want to make sure that my kids have lots of great memories, not just an inheritance.

Great ideas regarding the networking at the parties - it's always great to multi-task.  Your set-up sounds great.  Do you have a special room where you can leave the green screen up and ready-to-go?  Do you have your videos on YouTube or a website?  I'd like to check them out.  What kind of camera are you using?  Do your videos help you generate lots of business?  What are you doing to make sure they get the biggest audience?  I look forward to your insight.  Thanks.

I didn't take December off like so many people have in my office and now my new year is looking to be the busiest year yet! Buy when everyone else is selling and sell when everyone else is buying, that is the way to make money.
