Wow,  it's cold out there!  Have a Garden?  As you all know it does not have to be spring or summer for it to need care.  Well I thought I would share a few helpful tips to protect your plants during the Winter Months.

1. Don't throw away your dead plants!  Dead potted plants are full of useful organic matter, so don't waste them.  As long as the plants are not diseased, use them in a cold compost pile for rich soil to be insued about six months later in the spring.

2. Think about using a cover plant.  Using cover plants (called "Green Manure") like rye, clover or wheat are great ways to maintain enriched soil during winter months.  Ulitilzing a cover plant or increasing the amount of compost topsoil keeps hiberanting plants warm.

3. No one likes to have to buy new pots each year, So Take Good Care of your pots.  Cold weather, especially freezing temperatures can damamge your clay pots,  so get them cleaned up and store them indoors.

4. And Don't forget to water,  As long as the ground is not frozen,  you should water a little.  Not too much because plants are dormant,  but keeping water on the roots helps reduce the stress on them during the winter.

5.  Treat your indoor plans with care - Though houseplants grow at slower rates in the winter months, make sure they have plenty of light and that their leaves and stems stay hydrated, but not drenched.

6. Order  your spring seeds early!  If you order seeds from a catalog, be sure to order by the end of January.  You'll have the best selection and can start the seeds indoors if you like.

7. Take care of your gardens best friends.  Birds are the best part of a winter garden, so make sure they have shelter, food and water to thrive throughout the winter season.
