Winter in Northern Virginia can be pleasantly mild or harshly severe. Since a crystal ball doesn't give us an accurate prediction as to the future weather it is necessary to take the necessary precaution to protect flowering Spring bulbs.
If you plan to mulch do not use wood mulch. It will hold water and freeze both the ground and bulbs. The best mulches are about two to three inches of organic compost made from grass clippings and leaves or --------
a layer of pine boughs. They provide protective cover and still allow proper drainage and ventilation. Additionally, they can be easily removed at the end of the winter season.
