Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum - Charleston, SC
Sorry, but I have to say it one more time: another one of Charleston's hidden jewels. Charleston is so fortunate to host one (of nine) Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum. Historic documents housed in a historic building. How fitting is that ?
The Karpeles Manuscript Library is the largest collection of privately owned original documents in the USA. Dr. Karpeles and his wife Marsha founded the institution in 1983. The documents are rotated among the nine libraries.
The Charleston location was previously St. James Methodists Church which dates back to 1791. The church also served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. The congregation was active until 1989. Then hurricane Hugo struck and left massive damage to the building. The congregation joined another nearby congregation, and a few years later, Dr. Karpeles and his wife purchased the building for the Charleston branch of The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum.
The building is also available for civic meetings of historical nature, community meetings, art exhibits, school programs.
What a jewel this is for the Charleston community !
