Christmas has always been a very busy time in our family. The entire time my kids were growing up our tree was bulging with presents. This year my youngest child has moved on with his life and while now living on his own we didn't want him to have to come up with presents. So we called for a hard candy Christmas. We didn't really exchange gifts and just wanted a nice quite Christmas dinner. My youngest son showed up at the door early Christmas morning and we spent the day playing games and just being a family. At the end of the day my son said it was the best Christmas ever.
So now we are in January and my son came home and wanted to clear out all the old toys from the storage. He heard of a family that had children that didn't get any gifts this year. He wound up with quite a collection of stuff, so I took his lead and cleared out some of my old things that might have a better home somewhere else. In talking with a neighbor about his new gift giving venture, we found out about a few more families that just couldn't afford gifts for the kids. The neighbor chipped in a few items and got his brother in law to do the same. News spreads like wildfire here so before long we had a good collection of new gifts. We put up a tree and invited the families for a New year dinner with a tree and all the new goodies wrapped up. We had a ball and several children had their Christmas a bit late, but thought it was well worth the wait.
If only we could give to our fellow man all throughout the year and not just at Christmas, the world would be a happier place. Be thankful for the things you have and give of yourself so others can be thankful too.
