What's your phone number?

Do you ever get snobby about business phone numbers?

In this article I’ll show you why I do and if you work for or run a business you need to!

Do you realize that your business phone number says a lot about you?

Having a generic phone number like 829-7361 is the ultimate “standard” phone number. But what does that say about a business? It says they’ll take what they get. It says that the standard service is good enough for them. It implies that they acknowledge that they are small and don’t truly need a good phone number! These are the same companies that are usually associated with being a startup, a “Mom and Pop” or long-term mediocre businesses. None of which are good!

I believe that big businesses get it. You always see them with solid easily remembered phone numbers. Some phone numbers like the Rio Hotel & Casino’s 702-777-7777 cost over $150K to obtain. If that seems excessive to you I think you need to rethink your opinion. Now that you know that by dialing (7) 7’s you’ll be talking to the Rio, will you ever forget it? If you ever need to call them to book a room or see a show won’t you always remember their phone number? It’s impossible to forget at this point, it’s ingrained in your memory. It’s also Las Vegas’ most lucky number and that’s the very best kind of long-term marketing imaginable!

Now I’m not saying that we should all rush out and spend tens or hundreds of thousands on a “vanity” phone number but I do use it as a rough tool for gauging a potential businesses credibility. I know that if a business spends a little money obtaining a “better” number than their competitors that they must have a reason for doing so. Some of those reasons as compared to their competitors may be:

-They are a larger organization
-They see the value of repeat business
-They want a strong presence in your mind
-They want to be know as an industry leader No matter which, all of these reasons are GOOD reasons to choose such a company.

That’s why I always give preferential treatment to businesses with great phone numbers.

Go take a moment and analyze your competition’s phone numbers. How do their numbers stack up against yours?

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make a difference.

I never really thought about it in that way Jason. I tend to do businesses with those that provide the best service. Now that I have google, I don't worry about remembering numbers.

Jason,

I tried to get "BR549" but it was taken.

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make with a phone number is to try to be catchy or cute and offer it up like:  555-555-ROOF

Without telling people that the "ROOF" number is 7663

We were fortunate to obtain some really strong numbers.  I was able to get 397-7800, 392-1300 and 392-5400 and we can use them to track different marketing.

Jason:

You are right.  Some phone numbers are harder to remember.  If you get a business phone number and you find it hard for you to remember, then maybe your prospects won't remember it easily either.
