For all of you Eddie Murphy fans who may remember his time on Saturday Night Live and, more specifically, his Buckwheat character impersonations, you may recall the skit where Buckwheat released an album called "Buckwheat Sings." On that album was the classic - "Wookin' Pa Nub" aka "Lookin' For Love." Here's my thought process - 1) I think it's important that we have balance in our lives - work, play, exercise, music, sports, and perhaps most importantly, time devoted to your spouse / significant other and family; 2) I think that perspective is always a good thing and for me I always like to have some humor in there whenever possible, finally 3) it's Valentines day so if you didn't already have enough bombardment of that message from other places, I'm doing my part.
To me, "Wookin' Pa Nub" is very applicable in our business because I know lots of loan officers and Realtors who look for clients in all the wrong places. To be clear, I'm not saying we need to change our marketing strategy, what I'm really saying is that if you are working with someone who can't qualify to buy a home for a year, you are looking for a client in someone who isn't really a client - you can't say that you are working with a client because you won't get paid for your work (at least not for a long time). We need to call a spade a spade and make sure that we work efficiently by working with those who will be able to close a transaction sooner rather than later. The lyric is "Wookin' Pa Nub in too many faces, wookin' pa nub in all the wong pwaces..." Are you looking for love (client / transaction) in too many people - should you narrow your focus or have a niche or two? Are you casting your net in the wrong waters? Make sure that your advertising and marketing is hitting the mark and that you are properly pre-screening / qualifying (a good loan officer shoud be reviewing the income and asset documentation along with the credit and application information at a minimum) your clients so that you will find love in the form of a happy client and a commission check.
