Winterlude- The Rideau Canal Skateway

As a resident living in Ottawa, it has been a tradition to visit Winterlude every winter with my family. One of the aspects of Winterlude that I enjoy is the Rideau Canal. “The Worlds largest Skating Rink”. It is a time when families can get together, enjoy physical activity and are able to spend quality time together. The Skating Rink is 7.8 kilometers long.

Ottawa Rideau Canal

Along the way there are little cabins on the canal that offer something to eat or drink. One of the most famous snacks to grab on the canal is a beaver tail and hot chocolate, two things that Canadians are very proud of. We definitely know how to show it. Some don’t look forward to the cold weather that we get, however when the temperature drops in January I know the Canal is not far away. The Rideau Canal skate way is open from Rideau Street to Dows Lake including the Hartwell Locks. Being able to enjoy the Canal at night is a wonderful sight. While skating you are able to see all the city lights and there is a nice glimmer on the ice, while spending time with loved ones. The Rideau Canal was opened in 1832 and is the oldest operated canal system in North America, another reason why the Rideau Canal is such a large part of the Ottawa Community.

Also, in the summer time there is an annual festival that takes place from July 30 to August 2, which focuses on three main themes, the Rideau Heritage, active lifestyle and the World heritage/ Environment.  The festival celebrates the Rideau Canal with tours of the canal, art, photo exhibits, music and bike tours. I know the Canal is something that my family and I will grow up seeing as a part of our culture and hopefully pass it on as a tradition. Hope to see you there!
