A Geocaching Realtor

Most of my blog posts have been directed toward the Members Only since I'm not a Rainmaker...yet. I've posted about the typical questions and situations that associates like us deal with on a daily basis. Personally I really enjoy occasionally reading the humorous and personal interest blogs out there.  I thought that I would like to share one of my favorite hobbies...Geocaching!

Yes, I am a Geocaching Realtor! What's Geocaching? Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment (from the geocaching website, www.geocaching.com).

Basically it started with a guy in Oregon who decided to hide a 5 gallon bucket in the woods with treasures inside, such as a can of beans, camping stuff, and such. He posted his coordinates for his "cache" on the internet in an outdoors forum and invited  people to come find it. The ideas was such a hit that within just a few months the geocaching website was born. I've been an active 'cacher for 8 years and absolutely love it. There are currently 1,295,257 active caches and over 5 million geocachers worldwide. Now the types of geocaches range widely from the ammo can hidden on the top of a mountain that takes a three day hike to reach to micro-caches (log only) which are hidden on your local city park or even in the Wal*Mart parking lot.

My daugters with a cache. When one decides where they want to geocache, you can search the website by a variety of criteria. You can even develop automatic searches that update weekly to let you know of newly placed caches. One of the things I like about being a REALTOR, is that I am often in a new area, a new part of town, or even a town across the state from where I work. Whenever I get to work in an area like this, I always do a quick search for a few caches in the immediate area. When I am finished showing the properties, I always take a little extra time to search for the caches. I love being a REALTOR because what other job lets you stop and play in the middle of your day?

If you like technology, the outdoors, knowing something is there when no one else does, or just the thrill of the hunt (searching for something), Geocaching may just be right up your alley. Check out the website, www.geocaching.com, and hopefully I'll see you out there searching for that perfect cache!

Thanks Jim, we've been looking for a fun thing to do with our little boy.  What kind of GPS would your recommend that a pre-schooler might be able to hold and understand?

Conrad- Thanks for reading my blog! Geocaching is an awesome activity for kids of all ages. My girls have been doing it since they were 2yrs old. My middle one in the picture above is really good at it and enjoys it so much. I would recommend that you start with an easy cache (a level 1, terrain 1) which is usually in a park. You really don't even need a gps for these as the mapping feature really narrows it down quite a bit. My first 380 finds were without a gps. I use the basic model, Etrex Legend. Once you get close to ground zero within a mile, all the kids have to do is follow the arrow to ground zero. The gps is going to get you within 15 feet or less to the cache. Then the fun begins on searching for all possibilities of hiding spots. Most of the caches that you can trade items are packed iwth McDonald's toys and such which the kids love. My kids will go all day long as long as a few of the caches are traders! Get out there and have some fun!

Thanks Jim.  So some caches are not "trading" caches?

Thanks for the post, Jim. I am an Okie transplanted to Arizona. I was last in Tulsa before coming to AZ. I use a GPS all the time. I have a Garmin 76csx that would norally be used by a hiker. I load it with property corners when going to a remote listing. Sometimes it will help me find property corners. My 76csx does not have any road info in it. It does make a track which is also helpful if I am in the deep woods and want to find my way back to the car quickly. In areas where there are lots of logging roads, it can be helpful in finding my way back the way I came. As  "Prescottslandman" I could not do my job without it.

The thing I miss about Oklahoma and the OZARKS are the creeks and rivers and the green country. It is high desert here and there is very little running water.
