Link Farms

I have been looking at peoples websites on AR and really don't see where you keep your links.

I just opened this email

Dear Webmaster,   We would like to exchange link with your http://www.jojobrown.com/ at:   http://www.directoryagents.com/ http://www.reaestatedirectory.com/     Please reply to this email if you want to exchange links or email us back with the subject No Exchange Links if you don't want to.   Best Regards Capricon javascript:main.compose('new','t=staff@directoryagents.com/') http://www.directoryagents.com/

is this a link farm?  something I should stay away from?  how do you put links on your website.

I use a template and a member looked at my page for my links:  http://jojobrown.com/link_exchange.shtml

and said Google frowns upon farms.  I did use a template for adding these links but did it manually and organized myself.  In the beginning I wrote to people (on their website), but now people find me and add themselves, I approve/decline them at my discretion.

Currently google lists me on their first page for my tag "Nyack homes for sale"  and I'm kind of afraid to change anything.

Would someone show me an example, please?

Thank you to anyone who has the time to look at this.

Hey Joanne, lets let Mary comment on this one.  The link farms are a no-no, and the word link is a poison word.  It is better to have content in and around your links instead of a long page of links.

I do several tests on these requests....   and delete 90% of them!

1)  There should be no more than 50 links on the page that is linking to YOU.  Anymore than that is generally considered a link farm.
2)  The links should be closely related to your website's subject....  links from a cheese shop to a real estate agent is a red flag. Run.
3)  Check the Google Page rank of the page that they are offering to put YOUR link on.  If it's a PR0... that could mean it's a new site OR that it's been banned by Google.  Definitely stay away from banned sites!  A new site.... not really going to help you much today, but it may down the road.  You can check with a registrar to see how old the domain is.  If it's more than 5 or 6 months old with a PR0 I would not get involved...
4)  Check to be sure that the page YOUR link will be on has a link from the home page.
5)  Check to be sure the page YOUR link will be on is actually cached in the search engines (in the seach box, type in 'cache:www.nameofpage.com/page.html'    If THAT page is not in the Google index, your link will not get picked up.

I know I will get flamed for this, but I also do not trade links with any template sites such as Advanced Access, Homes.com, iHouse2000.com, etc.  It's an old arguement, but I personally just don't think it's a good idea.

I also generally steer away from anyone who is using an automated reciprocal link software.

Just my two cents...
