Louisiana Adds 21,200 Jobs in Last 12 Months

The Louisiana Workforce Commission has released their February 2011 jobs numbers and Louisiana fared quite well in the analysis.  In the last 12 months, Louisiana has added 21,200 non-farm jobs which equates to a 1.1% increase.

While that number may not sound large - here are two comparison points:

- It was Louisiana's largest increase in job growth since Hurricane Gustav

- Louisiana created jobs at a rate almost twice as fast as the rest of the nation as a whole

In total - the jobs created dropped Louisiana's unemployment rate down to 8%.  New Orleans led the way with 6,500 jobs created during the last 12 months...followed by Houma with 3,600.  Baton Rouge created 400 jobs during the same time period.

Baton Rouge has and will probably continue to deal with the effects of the public sector layoffs that have occurred, but it looks like the private sector has really stepped up hiring...and more than offset those job losses.  I'm hopeful that private sector job growth continues in 2011 and can mitigate whatever public sector job losses that may occur during this year.

All told - the Louisiana economy appears to moving ahead fairly nicely....especially when you compare it to what is happening across the country.
