What Drives, Pushes, and Motivates You? Stories of the Top Producers

This year I had the opportunity to hear stories from some of the local top producing agents from different brokerages. One of them owns multiple franchises and ranked consistently among the Top 10 teams in the world for production. Another agent is a regional top producer I asked to mentor me.

Agent A is a franchise owner. I heard their story during a public interview. Agent A has built a team that is consistently ranked in the top 10 teams worldwide in production. People are often asked to share their success stories. It's more revealing when they are asked what motivated them and drove that success.

Agent A revealed a story that would motivate anyone in the same situation. Agent A grew up in poverty raised by a single Mother with siblings. They were constantly moving around and having trouble providing the basic necessities. Agent A revealed at one point their Mother even had to steal clothing for a job interview and to provide for the children. Agent A grew up and worked hard at every job imaginable eventually landing in real estate. Agent A was determined to provide for their entire family and never be poor again, leading them to build one of the top producing teams in the world.

Agent B is a regional top producer I asked to mentor me during my first year of real estate. Agent B takes their business very seriously and is a workaholic. Agent B is driven by the same fear because of their experience in life. When Agent B was in college they were broke like every college student. The job was just enough to cover barely the rent and minimal tuition.

During Agent B's college years there were many hungry times with no meals. Agent B revealed that their roommate would go on dinner dates just to bring home some food to share. Agent B told me they are driven to success by the fear of being poor and hungry.

Hearing these stories makes me grateful for how blessed I am. I have yet to ever be in any situations like this, so it's hard to relate to their emotions. I did not grow up very poor or very rich. My family was below average for most of my life. Luckily we had a family grocery store that could at least provide food on the table daily, for us that was enough.

Recently I met another agent who I have become very close with. They told me their struggles and fear of becoming homeless just a year ago. Since I met this agent they have been a huge influence on me with their beautiful positive energy and attitude. In turn I committed to helping them by sharing business, ideas, resources, and training available. Funny thing is the agent is already driven and having their best year ever.

I'm a strong believer we are a product of our environment, and those factors are interchangeable once we make a choice to change the environment. It's amazing the transformation some people have when they are driven to change.

Fear is a great motivator and I'm impressed that these people use this negative emotion towards a very postive goal.  Success isn't just about the numbers and dollars.  I hope their personal life is just as rich.

Janet you are so right about fear being a great motivator, and true success beyond money. These amazing agents are humble and hungry for more success.

Mike, our success is related to how much we want and how far we are willing to go.  Many times, our life experience is what motivates us to do better and reach higher.  Negative experience can bring positive results if the person is strong enough to conquer the past.
