Arthur Ashe Monument Statue - Richmond VA

On February 6, 1993 Richmond, Virginia said a final farewell to its most famous prodigal son, Arthur Ashe. The first black man ever to win Wimbledon, Ashe brought recognition and honor to his hometown and his nation. But the country's pride in Arthur Ashe stemmed from more than just his successful tennis career. In addition to his athletic achievements, Ashe committed himself to AIDS awareness and education, spoke out against apartheid in South Africa and stood firmly in opposition of racism in America--something he experienced firsthand. It is not surprising therefore that the residents of Richmond would want to commemorate the noble life and benevolent work of one of their own.

The grand Monument Avenue is the site for five bronze sculptures of Southern heroes from the past as well as one twentieth century icon: Arthur Ashe, the internationally known tennis star, writer, and social activist. The statue was completed three years after Ashe's death. The placement of this work with Confederate heroes was very controversial

I remember the controversy when the statue was placed on Monument Avenue as these spaces were traditionally for heroes of the Confederacy.

Wallace,

Your right, its one of those weird Richmond occurrences. I guess that's why its located all the way on the end of Monument Ave. Thanks forr your comment.
