Exercise - a way of life

I Just joined the Active Rain Fit Club and thought I would share my thoughts on exercising and diet.

I have always been a big proponent of exercising and eating healthy. I was a 13 year member of the US National Speed Skating Team and realized quickly that diet had a great impact on performance. We were lucky enough to have a dietitian on call and a chef to prepare most of our meals. It wasn't until later, but I realized that it was because of a special diet that my dietitian designed for me that I was able to keep competing at a relatively high level with Ankylosing Spodilitous.

When I retired from skating, I completely stopped exercising and taking the time to prepare a healthy diet (it takes a lot of effort). You could say that I was slightly depressed from being kept from reaching my goals. My arthritis was getting worse and worse, to the point where I was becoming angry all of the time. One day I took a long look at what I had been doing for the past two years and decided to see if it was my change in diet that was the cause of my accelerated arthritis.

I decided first to do a full body cleanse so my body would be clean and ready to start a healthy diet. After much research, I decided on the Master Cleanse (AKA Lemonade Diet) by Stanly Burrows, I recommend the book - about 6 dollars at any book store. This was one of the only all natural cleanses. Let me tell you it worked great. My arthritis felt better already on day 2 and is still feeling better today (3 months later). My arthritis is not gone, just better.

After the cleanse, I started back on the diet that my dietitian had developed for me years ago. A bonus and side effect of both the cleanse and diet was the loss of fat, about 15 pounds worth. I was also able to start working out again. I started running and cycling five times a week. I feel better than I thought I would be able to again.

Now I am coaching the Park City Speed Skating Team, demonstrating drills and even skating with some of the athletes.

If you know someone who suffers from arthritis, and would like to try the cleanse I did and the diet I am on, let me know and I can send an email your way with some of the specifics. I would love to help anybody who who wants help.

Very inspiring story, I'm glad you are back. One thing, is it a typo that you run and cycle 5 times a day? If not, I could use some of your time management tips.

Nice post :)  I have to say - having done this cleanse myself (although only for a week, not 2 weeks like Tim) It does make a huge difference...

Congratulations on a wonderful come back.  I agree diet is the most important ingredient.

I too was having medical issues.  I was over 400 lbs at one point.  I have lost 1/2 the weight and am hitting the gym regularly along with coaching soccer.  All of my medical issues are now listing as history of.

Congratulations on taking control of your own health!!  So many people just spiral, and never stop long enough to take stock of what might be contributing to their problems.
