Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and international navy ships will participate in Fleet Week NYC this week.

Today marks the start of 2011 Fleet Week in NYC. The celebration started this morning with the Parade of Ships up the Hudson River, made up of Navy and Coast Guard vessels and aircraft. The ships will then pull into their berthing locations in Manhattan (Pier 88 - right next to Intrepid) and Staten Island to prepare for public visitation, which starts Thursday.

Hosted every year Memorial Day week, Fleet Week New York is the City's celebration of the sea services. This annual event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of today's Navy, Marine Corp.and Coast Guard Team.

Fleet Week includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the week, as well as public visitation of the participating ships. Intrepid's Pier 86 will be lined with displays from the military from Thursday through Monday. Special performances from top Broadway shows and Intrepid's Free Summer Movie Series on the Flight Deck will kick off with Top Gun and the annual Memorial Day Ceremony includes the unfurling of a 100' American flag.

Last year nearly 100,000 guests enjoyed visiting the ships, meeting their crews, and learning about their technology.

I have never been to this part of the country...  And out in CA, the rivers are not really used by warships...  So to see fleet week on a river, is kind of cool!

Hi Mitchell, great post about NYC's Fleet Week.  Ours, out here in San Francisco is in the fall, coinciding with Christopher Columbus, oops (SF is so politically correct), I mean Italian Heritage Day!

Hi Sandi,  Yup the sailors are in town. Wow 49th between 10th and 11th you couldn't be any closer to the ships and sailors ;-)

Hi Chris, Manhattan island is surrounded by rivers that all come together and empty into NY Harbor, one of the most intricate natural harbors in the world, it's an estuary that opens onto the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and the Long Island Sound to the northeast

Alexandra, Thanks, Memorial Day weekend is always fun in the city. You have a great week too!

Cheryl, It is fun to see all the sailors and ships. The weather is perfect too. Hope you come one day.

Hey David, Fleet Week is always Memorial day weekend. (Actually Memorial day weekend is the official start of Summer in NY ;-) Yes, they do have air shows.

Hi Peggy, Columbus Day is Italian Heritage day in SF lol. Giovanni da Verrazzano (Italian born but sailing for France) first discovered NY harbor in 1524, but Henry Hudson, an Englishman employed by the Dutch, reached the harbor and sailed up the river now bearing his name in 1609.

When I used to work in Manhattan, I loved seeing all the sailors out and about. Such a patriotic feeling.
