Put your car keys beside your bed at night!

Does your car have an alarm? If yes, put your car keys beside your bed at night.image of key

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the alarm button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and will continue to sound until either you turn it off or it stops on its own after a specific length of time. This tip came from a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this:  it's a security alarm system that you may already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most rooms inside your. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbours will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and the criminal won't want that.

And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a sexual abuse crime.

This would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. If he activates the car alarm, she'll know there's a problem.

Share this with all the people in your life. Tell your spouse, your children, your parents, your neighbours, your Dr.'s office, the check-out person at the market, everyone in your sphere of influence.

well, that is a useful tip. I will certainly be using that, and also passing it along.  I love it.

That is a really great tip!!!  I don't make it a habit to keep car keys with me at night, but really not a bad idea

Great tip Ted! I have always taught my 3 daughters (and wife) to carry their keys in hand before they leave a store. If they see anything unsual, press the panic button and set that alarm off! If it isn't that big of deal, they can press it again to turn it off. We try it often to show how everyone within earshot will turn around and look. :)

Ted, I absolutely love this idea.  Especially for women who live alone.  Suggested and I will reblog it, too.  Thank you!

Great idea, Ted! I've passed it along to a neighbor whose husband often travels (I offered her one of our dogs too - but she liked the car alarm idea better!).

Great tip Ted!

This would also work well for traveling and motel stops along the way! We have been really tired on road trips and found ourselves wondering where we were when we stopped to rest our heads in a motel at night!

Ted--I love this idea.  It seems so obvious reading about it here, but I have never thought of it or heard about it.  I will definitely be doing this!  Thanks for the great tip!

Ted, Great tips.  We keep our keys by the front door when at home because there are many of us that share the driveway.  However, I do keep a Doberman or two by my bed at all times and do take my keys our and keep them alert and ready when walking a parking lot :)

I keep my car locked even in the garage and the keys by my bed. If someone breaks in the house they can't find my keys to steal the car. I have heard of this idea about hitting the panic buttom on the key fob a while back so my keys are close by and handy.

That's some good advice. I'd have never thought of uisng the car as part of my home alarm system.
