As we enter the dog days of August it would be far too easy for us Realtors to take a break or basically, slack off. After all, the kids are finished with summer camp, seller's don't think it's a good time to list, buyers are unsure of the economy and lastly, it's so hot! We figure we can just pick up where we left off after Labor Day. But it's not that easy.
If you have school age children you know that when school was dismissed, they were given a summer packet to complete. At the very least, that packet probably included math assignments and an extensive reading list...at the least. These assignments are usually due on the first day of school. Now how does this apply to you as a real estate agent?
It's easy. Just like your kids can't take the summer off, you can't afford to take the summer off. Research has shown that kids lose a great deal of knowledge over the summer. As for Realtors? We can lose clients or the opportunity to get clients over the summer. Real estate is about being present. We have to be in front of people who are looking to buy or sell real estate every day. And if we can't get in front of someone, we need to be in contact with someone who is looking to buy or sell real estate.
Don't get me wrong. As real estate professionals we work extremely hard, so I am all for the well-earned vacation. But if you are planning to take some time off, do your "homework" first. Do some serious in the months before you travel to ensure that you have business in your pipeline when you return. If necessary, pay someone to cover your business while you are on vacation. Consider automating your social media posts. You could even take some training that you have been putting off all year.
What you want to keep in mind is this...if you take off the month of August, you could easily be cutting off your livelihood for the remainder of the year. Can you really afford to do that?
