Are you looking for a park-like community with lots of history behind it that is also near to big city amenities? Then, Bellevue, Nebraska, might be the place for you. Located just eight miles south of Omaha along the Missouri River, Bellevue has maintained its unique identity perhaps better than any other of Omaha's long-time suburbs. This is not surprising when you consider the rich history of the town that calls itself "Nebraska's First City." Bellevue began life as a fur trading post and grew to be Nebraska's first state capital (until Lincoln took over the duty). Though settled in the 1830s, the town was not incorporated until 1855. Bellevue's current population is about 50,000. There are a lot of reasons why Bellevue real estate might be a great choice for you if you are looking for a home in Nebraska.

Offutt Air Force Base, one of the country's largest military installations, is located in Bellevue. Offutt has played a key role in the history and continuing economic growth of this community, with an estimated current economic impact of more than $1.6 billion. Military and defense makes up the area's largest industry, but healthcare is a growing sector. Furthermore, Bellevue's primarily young and well-educated population and its high-tech labor pool are boons to the economy here. Consequently, unemployment rates are very low and income is above average for the state.

Bellevue overlooks the Missouri River, and this close proximity to the river means it can boast of a more hilly and wooded environment than other Omaha suburbs. In fact, Bellevue was designated a city-wide arboretum by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. There are 35 city parks in the town, providing more than 600 acres of green space for fun and exercise. You can take your pick of playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, sports fields, and trails. If that is not enough, there is also the nearby Fontenelle Forest, 1400 acres of woods near the Missouri River with miles of scenic trails and a nature center.

There can be no doubt that Bellevue residents value the natural beauty of their community. Green Bellevue is a volunteer organization supported by the city government which, according to its mission statement, strives "to ensure a greener, more beautiful Bellevue." Some of the initiatives Green Bellevue is involved with include tree planting, recycling, supporting community wildlife habitats, planning an interlocking system of bike trails, encouraging green construction practices, and protecting water quality.

With award-winning schools and fabulous parks, Bellevue has a lot to offer families. Three-bedroom homes start around $125,000 with a median home sales price of $142,000. Located in Nebraska's fastest-growing county, Bellevue continues to expand primarily to the south and southwest, although new homes are being constructed in many parts of town. Historic homes can also be found in this deeply rooted community.

Bellevue offers many attractions to its residents, including the Sarpy County Historical Museum, the Pioneer Cemetery, and the local Farmer's Market. The Olde Towne district of the city is being actively redeveloped and will hopefully become a destination as well. However, with Omaha in such close proximity, your options for arts and entertainment are virtually unlimited. If city amenities and a natural, woodsy environment sound appealing to you, take a look at a home in Bellevue. There are a lot of great reasons to choose a Bellevue NE home if you are looking to buy property in Nebraska. When looking for homes, be sure to use a Bellevue real estate agent that specializes in the area.
