The Hammer and the PC
Good words from a person well respected in my world about the use of computers. Enjoy! Hope everyone is enjoying this great weather in the Carolinas!
This is NOT a post about taking a hammer to your PC or ipad. It is a post about understanding. In today's world we are often overwhelmed with Technology. So to me the key is to understand why a hammer and a PC are very much the same. First the Hammer.
If you look at a hammer you can see it has a blunt area, a handle, and a forked end. Even if you weren't sure what a hammer was for you might be able to guess. It is in fact a tool . It is a tool with a specific design. It has a driving end and even has an "undo" end. If you never used a hammer you could pick one up with a nail and probably drive it into a piece of wood with a minimum of trouble. You would understand the tool
Now the PC. Well if you pick one up you could drive a nail but common sense tells you it probably is not for driving things. In fact the PC is a tool with no specific purpose. Let me say that again. The PC has no specific purpose. The non specific use for the device is what throws most people. You are not supposed to understand what it is for. When you say I do not understand PC's that is exactly the RIGHT thing to say. That is the whole point. YOU GIVE IT PURPOSE. You buy, write or access software to achieve an end. In the same way you buy a hammer to drive nails you buy a PC to ..... (get it). So you have to look at the PC as a tool.
Viewed as a tool the PC becomes a less scary. So if you know what a hammer does then take that knowledge and apply it to your technology or computer. Have a task and through software or reading or what ever, complete that task. Then move on to another task. After all you would say, " of course I can use a screw driver , I used a hammer right !"
View your Computer , or ipad or, smart phone, or whatever as a tool. If you view your PC like a hammer you will be less scared of it. If you are less scared of it then you probably will use the tool better. So understanding the relationship between the hammer and the PC will help you go a long way in this world of increasing technology.
