Maplewood, Missouri - Get your Kicks on Route 66
My fondness for Maplewood, MO started at an early age. My mom would tell us stories about her years as a young woman. She and her friend Helen were quite "hot" (I'll try to find some pictures) and also spunky. They would take the bus from our rural community of Washington, MO and go on shopping trips to the Maplewood Loop and occasionally trips to see the St. Louis Cardinals. Yes, they took the bus along Route 66. It sounded so adventurous and "cool" to an 8 year old.
To add to my fond memories, the first apartment that my husband and I had was the upstairs of one of the wonderful Victorian homes on Flora Avenue in Maplewood.
So now the Maplewood Loop is back up and running and drawing young and old alike. The merchants are unique and they are a close knit community of small business owners who work together to promote their town. I've started a slideshow showing just some of the places to go and will be adding to these pictures on a regular basis.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66
In addition to the Loop, Maplewood has very affordable and unique housing. The housing stock includes brick and frame bungalows, frame and brick Victorians, and mid century ranches. Many of the homes were built during the time of the 1904 World's Fair. (As a matter of fact, in the neighboring community of Richmond Heights, MO there are 40 homes which are called the Forty Thieves Homes (down to 38) because they were built with material from the World's Fair.)
