When I have clients moving to the area they always ask what they should definitely do when while in Shreveport-Bossier City. Locals have a long list of things they recommend, but it is hard to recommend them until I experience them personally. One thing I have found being a military spouse is that the area we are stationed in is only as good as I make it. The only way to truly enjoy yourself is to immerse yourself in the culture. This morning I experienced yet another great part of the Shreveport-Bossier City area… Southern Maid Donuts.
Even though Southern Maid was not founded in Shreveport-Bossier; it most definitely is a staple of their local culture, and is an indispensable part of the Southern tradition which began in 1937 in Dallas, TX. It quickly made its way to the Shreveport-Bossier area in 1942 and has been an iconic fixture ever since. Supposedly, the only advertising Southern Maid ever did was in the 1950s and still to this day you’ll find Miss Merry Mary on their boxes of donut deliciousness.
This morning I experienced Southern Maid Donuts for the first time! Embarrassing to say since I have been down here for almost 10 months now, but I had to have a special reason! Some clients of mine had their moving crew at the house this morning and their parents were in town from Pennsylvania. I couldn’t think of a better way to welcome these folks to the South!
So what makes a Southern Maid donut different than other donuts? Well, they are light and fluffy, pretty much melt in your mouth, and are made fresh daily! So if anyone asks what the “must-dos” of Shreveport-Bossier City, the start of their recommended day should begin at Southern Maid. Their donuts are the freshest and most delicious donuts I have ever had! YUM! Check them out!
