So, how many of you have an Alter ego? Can it get your more business or help you lose business? What about people in your office that might have an alter ego? Do they disrupt your rhythm within the office? Drive you crazy? Make you, your company, or your industry look bad? Can an alter ego be compared to a bad drunk? I think so. Many of you have heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is a prime example of an alter ego. Could you be very polite with your clients at first, getting them into the door. And throughout the process start to become moody, irritated at every little question. Possibly jumping down the clients throat at times?
Believe it or not, it's out there and this has nothing to do with Halloween. The ego can be such a fragile state of our being. But it can also be powerful and destructive not only in our business life, but within our personal life.
This could be slightly off topic, but what brought me to this topic was a comment that Marti Garaughty left in regards to Google. He said, "They never miss an opportunity to get their name out there." And my response was, "Google does amaze me. But I guess it can be somewhat easy since they have cornered that market. But they don't sit back, they are always thinking, which will keep them number one. So many fail because they get to the top and then sit back, thinking business will just keep rolling in... I know, I have done it before.
So, how many of you have done this? It can sometimes be a harsh lesson to learn. No matter if you are slow or busy, you should always be planning, marketing or both. Can your ego or even your alter ego get in the way once you reach it to the top of your business or field? Again, I have seen this happen.
Conclusion : Even if you feel like you sometimes have that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde mentality at times, you can keep it in check. Not allowing it to interfere with your work ethics or how you talk to clients throughout the process. This is something to keep in the back of your mind at times. I have experienced this in the work place several times. I remember a loan officer that I use to work with that was sweet as can be in the beginning of the process. And as time went on, when things weren't going his way, no matter whose fault it was, he would always take it out on the client. Hence one reason why he still isn't in the business. Sure, part of it could have been poor business planning on his part. But so many of us rely on referrals. Do you think anyone would refer you a client, even if you got the job done, but were yelled at or mistreated over the phone? I think not...... Keep a positive attitude and treat people the way you would like to be treated, no matter how bad things get.
