Washington DC Monuments at Night. Friday Photgraphs
Just an hour away but the buildings always look awesome to me. I like the way the Bachman's photo tips include the addition of an affordable couple of gadgets. One of Steve Bachman's tips is to learn on the camera you have now before upgrading. Also, he says check if any upgrade lens purchase will accommodate the step up camera version later. Plus, a big tip is to read the manual front to back. Listen and learn!
I went into Washington DC Wednesday night to get some photos of the floodlit monuments.
It was raining but I figured it would stop. It didn't.
So I was limited to what I could shoot from inside the car. I jammed the closed tripod between the seat and door and shot out the open window.
Many of the photos were messed up by rain still getting on the lens...I was not happy.
If you want to take clear night photos it is not very hard if you use 2 affordable tools.
A tripod and a remote shutter release. Tripods go as low as $25 for one that can support a point and shoot camera although those are too flimsy to hold steady a DSLR.
A remote shutter release is $20 for one with a cord and $50 for cordless.
You need these aids because the camera shutter must remain open a long time in night shots and you cannot hold the camera steady enough to get a clear shot (At least I cannot)
The remote shutter release really helps clarity as well.
You will notice looking through the viewfinder, that even if you use a tripod and push down the shutter button manually, you can still see movement from the mere finger pressure of pushing down the button.
That is enough motion to ruin a night shot or close up.
Taking these extra steps may be more work than you wish to do, BUT it will transform ALL of your shots including shots of interiors if you are a real estate agent.
I will do a video about night shots with examples in the future, but you can find all you need to know by Googling, "better night photography or how to take photos at night"Then...just go practice...
and practice...and experiment...
