Reach out and touch an Active Rain friend!

I liked this posting I read today from Active Rain.  SO much so, that I thought I would reblog it so others too may want to reach out to their active rain buddies.  HAppy Holidays!

I got a nice surprise last night.  While I was eating dinner, I received a telephone call and voice mail that I didn’t discover until I realized after dinner that I had left my phone at the other end of the house.

I saw that I had a message and listened to a nice Christmas greeting from my Active Rain friend Martha Brown.  I was sorry I had missed her call, and returned it right away.  We wound up chatting and laughing for half an hour. From our blogs we already knew we had a lot in common, like our love of animals and some similar experiences.

Martha BrownAlso, both of us have suffered some family losses the last year, and this time of year is a bit difficult for us, being our first Christmas without our loved ones, but we sort of nudged each other to focus on the happy memories we did have with our loved ones instead of focusing on our losses.  Not easy to do, but working on that and thinking of others at this season can help.  2012 will be a better year for both of us, and I feel happy to have made such a special friend in Martha.

One thing we talked about is the importance of Active Rain in our lives.  It is referred to as a “community”, but I feel like it is actually more like a “neighborhood”.  We might not feel we will ever know everyone in our community, or even have an opportunity to touch all of them, but we feel differently about those in our neighborhood.  We can knock on a neighbor’s door and say “Hello.  I’m your neighbor and I just stopped by to introduce myself and say hello.”  You would probably be invited to come in and have a cup of coffee.

That is why I like Active Rain.  Our blog “doors” are unlocked and we can stop by and visit each other all we want and can develop some real relationships and supportive friendships, even when we live on opposite sides of the country, like Martha and me.  I know if I ever get back to the Annapolis area, I will make a point of calling Martha to see if we can get together, and I hope she will do the same next time she gets out to California to visit her sister.

I haven’t called Active Rain friends for awhile, so thank you Martha for reminding me how nice it is to make such personal contact with the folks we have gotten to know pretty well here in the Rain.  I have made a standing invitation to my Active Rain friends to give me a call if they will be in my area and I will take them to lunch.  A few have taken me up on that, and it has always been fun.  I hope to get to meet more of you in person.

Meanwhile, have a wonderful Christmas!
