Zillow Announces Partnership With 11 Newspaper Companies

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Zillow

I'm very happy to announce a very large partnership between Zillow and 11 newspaper companies representing 282 papers (so far!). Here's a link to the press release. And here's a link to the blog post by Lloyd Frink (President of Zillow). Also, here's one of the articles on the news so far.

The partnership will work like this: advertisers on the local newspaper websites (e.g., brokers, agents or homesellers) will be offered an option to market their listing and open house on Zillow. We of course benefit because the local newspapers have huge reach when it comes to local advertising sales presence. The newspapers benefit because they gain access to our technology platform to run their newspaper websites' real estate section.

A similar group of newspapers already has a partnership with Yahoo HotJobs for employment classifieds. We're very excited about being the newspaper companies' first real estate partner.

Didn't newspaper advertisers already have the option of marketing their listing and open houses at Zillow?  Sorry, but this sounds like the annoying offers to install the Google toolbar that come with every new piece of software.

Most brokers in Santa Clara County scoff at the idea of advertising in the newspaper, so Zillow is backing a dying horse.  They would be better served by building a great MLS platform and offering it to Associations with no dues.

If you build it, they will come.

I am just curious.  Who uses newspapers anymore?  Aren't most newspapers experiencing a drop in circulation - even with their websites?

I am wondering how the shrinking world of newspapers will affect this program of yours?  Everyday, newspapers go out of business or merge with other papers to stay afloat.

Maybe your market is different, but I just don't see a big future in newspapers or their websites in my area.  I expect most of them will be out of business in the next few years around here.  As far as I am concerned, most newspaper advertising is a waste of money.

I was outside this morning, had to run back in the house and get the family out there.  We decided that the plastic roll of colored wood fiber must be an ancient form of communication, atleast that is what google said it was.  lol

Hi, it's David from Zillow. Spencer's traveling today so I'm helping out.

@ Ginger -

To get started on Zillow, you can find an overview of tools for RE Agents at this link.

@ Deborah -

Thanks!

@ Patti -

Physical newspaper circulation is generally declining but many papers are actually seeing growth online. Initiatives like this add additional value for the papers' customers and for that I commend them. For buyers using Zillow, the value here is obviously access to more listings on the site.

@ Frank -

Anyone can advertise their listing on Zillow for free. This is an even more convenient option for folks who are already advertising their listing in the local paper. Since most buyers start their home-search online, we think it makes perfect sense as a package deal (unlike the spam software you mentioned.)

@ Matt -

LOL
