Uniquely Minnesota Artful Distractions—Homeowner Version: D’oh! Homer at Home in Centerville

By
Real Estate Agent with Boardman Realty Minnesota License#90858

homerNow what can I say about this permanent lawn sculpture except the homeowner must have a great sense of humor and fun! Homer Simpson in all of his colorful glory was spotted by my teenagers in the front yard of a home between Centerville and Lino Lakes.

It is definitely one for the collection of Uniquely Minnesota Artful Distractions as when my son first saw it I was distracted by the exclamation, "Look! There is a giant Homer Simpson in that yard!" On our next trip down to the Twin Cities, taking the short cut from Columbus through Centerville, we slowed down and there was Homer in all his glory. This piece of chainsaw art is carved right out of the what must have been a massive tree where it stood in the front yard of the home. Not the lawn decoration for every family but for lovers of the Simpson's, it is "¡Ay, caramba!" or a great surprise!

Teri... this is funny. As much as I can appreciate all types of art and actually like this one, I don't think I could have it on my property. Depending on where some live, the neighbors might not be happy with you.  lol

On another note, my grandfather use to do this as a hobby and for a living on the side. Wood carvings and they actually made a small little museum for his carvings and paintings in Two Rivers, WI.   Just thought I would mention this since you live in MN.

Teri, you have some unique homeowners in your area; with quite the sense of humor.  It is quite amazing what they did with a tree stump.

I'm with Jeff though I could not have this on my property.  I'm not a big fan of the Simpsons.

Jeff--I think that museum was just featured on a news program that runs late on Sat evening after the regular news. If I had known it was your grandfather, I would have watched it. His carvings looked to be smaller right? As for Homer...He is on acreage so not too many neighbors would be bothered...just a distraction for the kids!

Marchel--I would prefer the gnome or a bear myself but my kids would like Homer...Good think all of our trees are alive!

Teri...  really?  Two Rivers, WI?  His name was Ivan Belonger and he passed away around 1990......  His carvings were usually no bigger then 4 ft. He did do an Indian that was about 7 ft tall. I remember he did one of Jimmy Carter.  That would have been cool if that was him that they were talking about. What channel?  I wonder if you could go to their web site to read about it?

OH, this one is too much! I don't think the wife is too happy. I would hate my husband walking around all the time saying quotes from the show.

Jeff--There was a carving museum story last week or so...but from the promo they all looked like they were in more hand carved pieces...about 6-12 inches high. I didn't catch the name of the town but they usually are driving distance from the Twin Cities. There are two stations that do this type of show...i will have to look into which one it was to see if it was about your grandfather. Maybe another museum as around here it is quite the hobby.

Jennifer--Just you wait until your two get a little older...I am so outnumbered in my house. Lots of strange quotes from tv shows...LOL. No Simpsons in my yard but the quotes and recaps fly around the minivan on the way home from school...Drives me nuts! :)

Teri....  that was probably not him. Not sure how far Two Rivers is from the Twin Cities, but it would have to be more than 7 hours away. Tow Rivers is located on the east side of WI and is right off Lake Michigan.

Jeff--You are probably right...When they do stories on WI it is usually the western side of the state as they are where many Minnesotans and Twin Citians have lake homes and cabins. Weird coincidence that there would be more than one wood carving museum....But then looking at how many sculptures are in yards around here...maybe they aren't so unique after all. :)
