Heat pump vs Natural Gas

By

I currently have a oil burning furnace that I will be replacing in the spring.  Natural Gas is avaialble but I am leaning toward a heat pump.  Is a heat pump more eco friendly?

John,

In order to get points for your post it has to contain 50 words...just FYI :-)

Secondly,

I would go with natural gas, it is cheaper and a warmer type of heat.  I had heat pumps when I lived in PA and the electric bill was astronomical. Then again, if your home is well insulated then either would probably work.

Hi John,  there is debate about the heat pump but as a short answer...yes.  Google RESNET and find an energy rater near you.  They can answer all of your energy questions after doing an energy rating on your home.

John,

One of the many considerations is your climate.  The cooling side of the heat pump is pretty efficient in all climates but heating side efficiency drops rapidly at about 40 degrees (in addition to the fact that homes warmed with heat pumps are never quite as comfortable as those with other systems).

If you want to make yourself crazy, there are now dual systems incorporating a gas furnace with a heat pump so you can switch fuels as energy prices change.
