EGREMONT MA - Berkshires Weekend!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams NY Realty

President’s Day weekend was more like fall weather than winter! Despite the 40 degree weather, the sun was out and it was a perfect weekend to be in the Berkshires.  For those of you who have just moved to Westchester County and are looking for weekends retreats, Egremont, Great Barrington up to Lenox is only two hours away and offers both winter and summer activities for all.

We have been going up to Egremont for the last 15 years after selling our second home in the Catskills.  We regularly go to The Weathervane Inn. This 1785 renovated farmhouse was purchased about that time by Jeff and Maxine Lohme. They were living in New Jersey with their two daughters and decided they wanted a change in lifestyle just about that time. Each of the 10 rooms are homey, they have a really nice game room with antique books and collectibles for sale and on display.
They have a warm fireplace to sit and read by, and a pool for the summer months. The best part is their breakfast, which not only has a sideboard, but home made to order breakfasts.   Since Jeff and Maxine’s daughters are now in college, they have decided to sell this beautiful Inn. If you or someone you know is looking for a good investment or change of lifestyle, call or email me and I’m happy to introduce you to the local listing agent.

Saturday night we ate at one of the best, consistently good local  restaurants in Egremont called The Old Mill. No reserevations under 6, so get their early! The menu is superb with nightly specials.  Another popular restaurant up the road in Egremont is John Andrews, which serves farm to table fresh dishes.

Great Barrington is just 10 minutes away and offers some good restaurants including Castle Street Cafe, which has a bar side as well as restaurant, and a new Italian restaurant called Fioris.  For lunch, you have choice of Baba Louie’s, a small but extremely popular pizza and salad restaurant on Main Street, and a new kid on the block, Gypsy Joint, which has excellent assortment of foccaccio sandwiches, salads, pizza and more! They also have entertainment.  It reminds me of a college hang out!

We are not skiiers, so were happy that the weather was brisk but sunny. We took our usual hike/walk up to Bash Bish Falls in Egremont. There are two parking lots to access the path. The first one goes down a rather steep decline. The second one, and the one we take, is a slightly uphill path, with beautiful rolling water river until you reach the top, where you see the bash bish falls seen here.

Summer is also great in The Berkshires. Most people are familiar with Tanglewood in Lenox, but there are also numerous local theaters, fishing and antiquing that I’ll highlight in another blog!

So, no matter what time of the year, this 2 hour trip to The Berkshires, is well worth the ride!
