Kelvin Abrams is a very dynamic and passionate person. I was lucky enough to catch up with him during “nap time” to learn more about Tiki’s and Kelvin himself. Tiki’s Playhouse is a Doggie Daycare and boarding facility which also offers grooming services, dog food delivery, and soon to come, an ice cream truck just for dogs!
Kelvin was inspired to start this business when his beloved Weimeranner, Tiki, passed away at a young 11 months old. Kelvin traveled a lot for his previous job and had to board his dogs--he never felt great about that. He wanted to create an environment where leaving your dog at a boarding facility was like leaving your dog at a second home. Home is what he hascreated in Tiki’s. The actual facility is a home that has been converted to accomodate the business. Tiki’s has a very large, and well maintained back yard area. It is an area that is quiet and calming---even with about 15 dogs out there at a time. Kelvin screens the dogs thoroughly before allowing them to interract with each other. He also keeps a lookout at all times when the dogs are outside together. I was amazed at how well behaved all the dogs were; big and small. As Kelvin and I were in the kitchen talking and the windows were open, the dogs were all listening at the window---I wish I’d taken a picture.
In keeping with the homey feeling, the dogs even have company at night. Kelvin blows up his air mattress, turns on classical music, and tucks everyone in for the night. Again, you can see this is more than just a business to Kelvin.
In addition to day care, boarding and grooming, Tiki’s will be rolling out Maryland’s first Doggie Ice Cream Truck. Kelvin was interested in bringing something new to the streets for our four legged friends. The treats look yummy and are served in small cups. Kelvin’s own dogs have tried out these treats and like them very much. Not only will the colorful truck serve ice cream, but will have cold water and a wide variety of holistic treats. Keep your eyes and ears open for this exciting truck to hit the streets in April. You can also visit the Doggie Ice Cream Truck at the Easter Eggstravaganza April 7 from 12 noon to 3pm at the Baltimore Humane Society and Paws on Parade Walk May 12 from 10am-2pm.
