For years, one of my favorite searches on the internet was Boise, Idaho Modern Style Homes for Sale. Initially, it produced very little - and what it did produce was anything but satisfactory.
Modern, to me, includes mid-century; Frank Lloyd Wright; Scandinavian and other European style - - crisp, clean and uncluttered design. Open floor plans are enhanced with sleek, streamlined builtins and unobstructed expanses. The use of form and function permeate the shapes and sizes of everything. Stemming from my Italian heritage, I'm certain, this is a lifelong attraction. Seldom have I had the luxury of enjoying the style in my own surroundings. I've gotten close on a few occasions, with slab cabinet door fronts and uninterrupted solid surface counters and floors. I suspect though, that my graphic artist son might dispute this claim of ever having been 'close'. He and I share this passion for the modern, minimalist look.
Lucky for me, I married a man who ALSO shares this love of the modern. Thus, the newest of our commitments in housing. Moving is a big production, we all know that. We've determined, it will happen again, only when we move to our ideal modern home! Having downsized several years ago, from 3800 to 2000 square feet of living space, we often find ourselves with more "stuff" than places to put it, and more people than places to seat them. Not good when your first love is being the host of events designed to gather those you love most. Our single level, contemporary style rambler on the Boise River is a delightful home, perfect for the two of us, which is the occupancy the majority of the time. Warm, welcoming, dark hardwood floors, cherry slab cabinetry, glass tiled, recessed fireplace design, hand troweled wall surfaces, vaulted ceilings and slab granite. Solid glass entry door and contemporary colors make it a happy place. Modern? Not so much, really. A noble attempt that, due to time constraints and unavailability, fell a bit short.
When we remodeled this home from it's disturbingly 90's look a mere five years back, we searched and searched for those things modern which we hoped to incorporate. Not in Boise, the folks would say. Over and over again, we heard "not in Boise". Of course, that was 2007. About 2009, 2010, I started seeing glimpses of the very items and features for which we'd been searching. Here. Well, now we know it's possible. Not necessarily affordable yet, but available and within reach as we set our minds to finding that perfect size, style and price tag to justify the next move.
