There are two most commonly used proactive methods of helping reunite lost pets with their owners:
- ID Tags - You can order custom pet identification tags with your name and number on the front and a QR code that calls your number on the back. - Microchip - AVID and HomeAgain provide microchips for your pet. Animal shelters have microchip readers that they scan lost pets with, to see if they can track down the owner's contact information. One thing to keep in mind is that owners need to make sure their info is current and that there are fees to maintain and update the info in the microchip databases.
However, once your pet is lost, here three things you should do to help you find your pet:
- Flyers - Be sure you have a recent photo of your pet, just in case you ever need to make "Lost Pet" flyers one day...and don't forget to include a QR code that calls your number. Posting signs around the neighborhood will also alert the neighbors to be on the lookout.
- Social Media - Post lost pet's info on Twitter.com (be sure to include a pic), Facebook.com (be sure to make it a public post), Petfinder.com, Petharbor.com and Craigslist.org.
- Shelters & Vets - Visit your local shelters and veterinarians and post your lost pet flyer on their bulletin boards.
