Attention Summer Renters! Here is another really good reason why renters should use a Realtor or real estate company when renting a summer vacation home. One of the property owners whose home we rent told us that a woman called them to get the check in information for their summer rental in Sea Isle City that they rented for $4,500. a month or so ago. The property owner knew nothing of the rental. It seems that the "for rent by owner" rental website HomeAway.com, where the owner listed his home for rent was hacked into and it directed the customer to a 3rd party in Europe who after collecting the rent in full, disappeared with the customer’s money. The woman naturally was out the $4,500 and had to rent another property, using a Realtor this time. This is NOT an isolated incident! It is happening all over the internet. Buyer beware and use a Realtor whenever possible.
