It’s almost time to show our patriotism and celebrate the birth of our great nation and there are multiple ways to do so this year in the Fort Mill area with fireworks galore, parades and the quintessential American game, baseball.

Fourth of July Festivities

  1. 1. Cheer on the Charlotte Knights as they take on the Gwinnett Braves at Knights Castle in Fort Mill. Gates open at 5pm, game starts at 7:15pm, and the Wbt Skyshow follows the game. This is billed as the largest Fourth of July fireworks display in the southeast and the game sells out each year so get your tickets early. Online tickets can be purchased here. Note: This is a fantastic fireworks show but they usually play loud, patriotic music during the fireworks. For me this completely ruins the effect of the fireworks. I’d much rather listen to the explosion of the fireworks lighting up the sky and the oohs and aahs of the crowd than hear Neil Diamond sing “Coming to America”.

2. Head over to Carowinds for Night on Fire. Spend the day riding roller coasters and stay for a 10pm fireworks show. Free admission to Carowinds on July 3 and 4 for those with a valid military ID. The season pass parking will be closed all day July 4 to set up for the fireworks show. www.carowinds.com

3. The city of Tega Cay not only celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, but also its birthday. This year will be Tega Cay’s 30th Anniversary and it will no doubt be full if fun and festivities. Among the activities scheduled for the day, a pancake breakfast in the Glennon Center, a golf tournament, a land parade starting at 9:30 am, and a boat parade that begins at 11am and arrives at Windjammer Park at 12:30pm. Don’t miss the Carolina Show Ski Team Performance at 1pm. The days festivities will be capped off by a fireworks show at 9:30pm.

4. Another option for 4th of July Fireworks is the Lake Wylie Firework Show. Many people head to Lake Wylie to celebrate Independence Day which just may be the busiest day of the year on the Lake with an estimated 30,000 people taking part in lake activities. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:45 by the Buster Boyd Bridge. Best viewing areas are from T-Bones Restaurant, the deck at Rey Azteca, the patio at Lake Wylie Pizza, or from the water. It’s almost as much fun to watch the boats gather around the bridge as it is to watch the fireworks. Note: This firework display is funded 100% through donations. If you would like to contribute send a check to Camp Thunderbird Fireworks Fund, One Thunderbird Lane, Lake Wylie SC 29710.

5. Head to The US National Whitewater Center for the Coca Cola 4th of July Festival ,but be prepared for large crowds. Festival is free and takes place both July 3rd and 4th. Parking is $5, live music begins at 4pm, and free samples of Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream will be served. Fireworks will be launched from Hawk Island and begin at 9:30pm. More info.
