August 19 Is Kid's Day At The Olney Farmers and Artists Market

A focus on kids will feature a special interactive program led by demo chef, Ann McCallum, author of "Eat Your Math Homework", who will show us how we use math every day in the kitchen. Then everyone will get to eat the delicious results!

 

Fraction Sticks, Probability Trail Mix, and Fibonacci Snack Sticks (even fun to say!) will be produced and consumed during this engaging activity. Then, there will be a math scavenger hunt and book signing.

 

Music by The Outerloops with one of the market vendors Brad Wolfe from Shea Wolfe !!

Two sessions: 10:00 am - 11:00 am & 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm.

Market Profile: Homestead Farms

Straight from the Edelen family farms, Homestead Farms celebrates its fourth year bringing a variety of crisp fruit and vegetables straight from their garden.

 

Using integrated pest management to keep the produce fresh, the booth is usually filled with an assortment of crops featuring tomatoes, lettuce, kale, spinach, basil, eggs, broccoli, raspberries, cabbage, peppers, cucumbers, squash eggplant, watermelons, cantaloupes and many others.

 

In addition to pest management, Homestead Farms also utilizes organically approved sprays to create the best produce possible.

 

The booth lets their products speak for themselves. "Farming. That's what we do."

Don’t Miss 2012 Farm To Table Dinner
Coming on Sept. 14th!

The Olney Farmers and Artists Market is now selling tickets for the 2012 Farm to Table Dinner. This years dinner will be Friday evening, September 14th, from 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm at Rocklands Farm in the Darnestown/Poolesville area of Montgomery County, only about 35 minutes from Olney.

The event will start with champagne and hors doeuvres and a farm tour at 6:30PM. It is a beautiful farm, and there are several amazing chefs this season, including the famed Roberto Donna, from La Forchetta; Ismar Reyez Cruz, from El Nopalito Grill and Chef Kenny Louis, a renowned personal chef, based in Harlem and DC. Other participating restaurants/bakeries will include Taste Mezze from Olney, Wildfire and Georgetown Cupcakes. There will also be live music, wine and art work for sale from the wonderful Plein Air artists. Guests will have a chance to watch the Plein Air artists in action, painting scenes of Rocklands. The work will be on display in the Rocklands Barn, during dinner. End with a dessert buffet and bonfire (weather permitting).

This year, partnering with Growing Soul, a non-profit that helps feed needy people in the area. Ticket prices will remain the same as last year: $95. Per person or $175. Per couple. Tickets are now on sale at the Market information booth and through the website by going to our 2012 Farm to Table page.

Maryland Gazpacho Soup Recipe    

6 cups chopped tomatoes

1 ½ cups chopped cucumber

¾ cup chopped yellow pepper

¾ cup minced onion

3 or 4 jalapeno peppers-minced

1/3 cup olive oil

5 Tbsp. vinegar

½ tsp. minced garlic

¾ cup water

1 can  (8oz.) tomato sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Prepare all ingredients in a large bowl. Refrigerate overnight. Serve with shredded cheddar cheese and croutons.  

There is no cooking.  Gazpacho soup is served cold.

This soup is delicious.  The recipe is from the Heirloom Tomato Festival in Westminster, Maryland.  Tested and recommended by Dolores Kelley.

I love Gazpacho Soup in the summer.  I just made it a week ago.  It's a similiar recipe as the one you have posted here.
