Natural Mosquito Repellant and Saving Lizards
Mosquitos are everywhere this year, and Clayton,NC is no different to most of the United States. Dallas is taking measures to combat the scourge and so am I.I promised this year to wage war on the mosquitos because they seek out my sweet irish blood, along with my youngest son Rory who is a favorite target as well. They started attacking so early I knew I had to do something otherwise summer was not going to be good. The first thing they tell you to do to get rid of mosquitoes is to eliminate all standing water. I have a lot of pots and junk near my shed which is quite far away from the house, and the mosquitos rule out there, but I really did not have anything near the house that had standing water so I wondered where they were coming from........then I looked up, gutters!
It was like a mosquito tenement, black stagnant, disgusting, leaf filled water in every gutter, no wonder they were so bad. So I cleaned out the gutters and was about to go off and get a chemical mosquito killer with the hose adapter and spray everywhere around the house when my neighbor casually mentioned that you’ll kill the mosquitoes........and everything else!!
He’s right, of course and whatever I don’t kill they’ll be poisoned by eating something with the chemical on it, and then I thought about our well water, could the chemical eventually work its way into our drinking water?
So I went online and found a garlic mosquito killer, all natural won’t harm the other bugs, good for the environment etc, etc. Now I had to endure another two weeks of mosquito biting but my garlic concoction arrived and I started spraying. After a couple of days it seemed to be doing its job and there did not appear to be as many bugs. They say if you spray and it rains shortly after it is not as effective and to re-spray, guess what? It rained every day, every day!
So I’m out there spraying again and I’m thinking, this isn't working, I hade just about convienced myself that I should go get some nasty chemical and do the job right, when I turned around and sprayed this guy, top to bottom. Covered him in garlic sauce, garlic powder, whatever it’s called and, he didn’t seem to mind, if fact he might have enjoyed it. These little guys are very common in the Clayton area. So needless to say I am sticking with the garlic natural mosquito repellent for now and I think it’s working, I cover myself in bug spray before going out also, but we still have lots of lizards around the house. The correct term for these critters is 5 lined skinks
