Is now the time to Get into Real Estate Sales?

By
Real Estate Agent with BCR Realtors 262359

I remember this same question coming up from an individual in the mid 80's when things didn't look so promising for agents...and particularly so for new ones.  I thought about it. What did I tell that person back then?......

Well I am not absolutely certain, but I believe it went like this:

  • You know you can do well if you treat it like any other job.
  • Go to work each each day with a positive attitude.
  • Study what successful agents do.
  • Design a plan to uniquely promote you and your special skills.
  • Get involved in your community.
  • Always follow up!

Well fast forward 20 years and I am  pretty sure that those are the same basic suggestions I am giving prospective agents today!

Funny how some things change overnight and others concepts never really change like hard work, perseverance, and honesty.....it truly works in any profession.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!  and I'd shake your hand if I could but since I can't , here go:

Well Said!

I got into the business about a year and a half ago, when the Tucson market started to take a downswing.  Everyone though I was nuts to leave my corporate job with a great title, benefits, etc.  But here I am, doing just fine while agents are dropping like flies all around me.  Why, because it's a real job and I work my butt of at it!  It's not rocket science...

I knew you had the experience factor behind you. How is the historic home market hoding up in your area?

Dawn,

I am glad you see it the way you do. A lot of newer agents have this false image of difficulties in the business.  Treat it like any other job and you can do well.  Go the extra distance...you will do really well!

I think if you are focused, know your market, you will do well.

It's a Good Life!

Trey,

I left a very good full time job in May of last year in order to sell Real Estate full time. The last two months of 2007 almost put me under, but I'm hanging in there and am hoping for a strong 2008. I do have to stick to those basics you wrote about here in order to survive. It is about having a good work ethic, sticking to the plan and going at it each and every day.

Frances,

You are right about knowing your market...that's a BIG factor.

Trey, for those lucky enough to get historic properties listed in decent locations, the market's still pretty good.  Prices may have softened, but there's always interest.

Brian,

I seem to have a resurgance of new and old prospects calling and looking on my 170 yr. old home.

I like ARDELL's comment, that is the attitude that will sustain us during tougher markets.

I am featuring this post, Trey....it is so timeless.......

ALL Christains should practice real estate like that!!

Come to think of it...ALL real estate professionals should too!

God is good to have given us a Savior.....Jesus!!

Alexander,

Thanks for the kind comment.  You know ...you never go wrong, if you do the right thing.  Somehow so many lose sight of the importance of good work ethic and only look at short term gratification.

Thanks for the post Trey. I have been in real estate about 3 months and have come to realize it's going to be a lot of work to get going. It is encouraging to read what someone with your experience is giving for advice for younger agents. Thanks so much.

Ardell is right. If you can do it when the climate is poor you will never take the good times for granted... and you know how to survive when it goes downward again.

I couldn't agree more.  As a fairly new agent I've tried to implement all the strategies you mentioned.  I come from a solid sales background and I always felt like I was spinning my wheels for someone else.  Now that I'm entirely in control and responsible for the success of my business, I feel more free than I have in years.  I believe that if you're not afraid of hard work, you will definitely survive regardless of what the market is doing.

Thanks Trey, You are so right about certain things never changing. The "right" way doesn't become "right" without validity. You are "right on". Deb

Thanks Deb! I believe you took a trip recently. That was the right thing to do.  :-)  We need to take one ourselves.

I did Trey but it was short lived. Ten days compared to the years of work just was a tease. I need a sabbatical but it's not the time for one! Take a vacation once a month by taking even one night away. That's what the pros tell us. I try but it just doesn't happen. Take care, Deb

I'm still here!  This is a great time to be an agent.  The bad ones are leaving and there's less competition.  If you are a hard worker you will survive.  Those who wanted a quick buck to take their boat out and play all week are gone.....and they had to sell the boat!
