Annual Bald Eagle Watch -Lake Coeur d'Alene- this week through Sunday

The annual Bald Eagle Watch is this week. Starting Dec 26th and ending on Dec 30th, 2012.

Last week there was a count of at least 260 Bald Eagles. So you should be able to spot plenty of them congregating for their annual winter feast of those tiny little spawning Kokanee in Wolf Lodge Bay!

BLM and Idaho Department of Fish and Game will have staffers at Mineral Ridge boat launch and Mineral Ridge Trail head.

Eagle ambassadors will have high-power spotting scopes, mounted displays and interpretive materials available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

DIRECTIONS: Go east of Coeur d'Alene about 8 miles on Interstate 90. Take the Wolf Lodge Exit. Both of the staffed viewing areas are along Highway 97.

In the case of bad weather be sure to check for cancelations or updates by calling
(208) 769-5048 after 9 a.m. each day. BLM will also post a message on the Coeur d’Alene Field Office webpage.

Pam, it's nice to see the Bald Eagle is thriving at Lake Coeur d'Alene. The Bald Eagle almost became extinct a few years ago.

Pam, I bet this is an amazing site to see, even seeing one bald eagle in flight would be fun, but several would be amazing.

Michael, When I first moved to Coeur d'Alene, 22 years ago, there were only 26 Bald Eagles sighted that year. One of those pairs actually nested in a tree by our waterfront for several years.

I saw two bald eagles flying down the river by my house this week. Never fails to awe. Can't imagine being able to see a large congregation of them at once.

It was amazing how close we were able to get to the eagles. They were even perched in tree branches only 10 feet above our heads. They didn't seem to be at all bothered by our presence. It was the largest group of Eagles I have seen here over the past 22 years!
