OK, all you Birding Enthusiasts. It’s that time of year again.
THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT is a joint project by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada and will take place February 15 through the 18th, 2013.
To participate all you need to do is count the number of birds in your backyard for 15 minutes and identify their species and how many of each species.
Visit The Great Backyard Bird Count Goes Global press release for all the details and to enter your Backyard.
All counts will be entered in an online data chart and as a participant you will be able to view what others are recording on interactive maps. It should be very interesting to see the tally of data as it comes in.
Did you know there are over 10,240 species worldwide? That is a lot of species. In the past over 600 different species have been recorded.
Scientists record and monitor the data to better enable them and us to conserve their environments and track bird health of species over time.
So not only is it for a great cause, it can be fun too. Get the whole family involved. Maybe the information can be used for a science project sometime during the school year.
Get your application and web button and bird I.D. tips and more at the press release site listed above and GET COUNTING!
I didn't realize this was done in February. My girls will be very interested in participating. Thanks for sharing this info. For some reason we thought it was conducted in the Fall and that we had missed it.
Bobbie - what a great thing to do for those who are interested in ornithology.
Hi Dana, I believe there is another one also. I do think they do it more than once a year. Hope the girls enjoy it!
Steven, Yes, for those of us who do enjoy our birds this could be a very interesting count, especially with the web access updates they have this time.
That is pretty cool, it will be hard to name every species though, have fun.
You're right David. Have to find my bird book and have it on hand before I start. Thanks!
Goodness! I wouldn't be any help with this. I just know birds by their pretty colors, that's a blue one, that's a red one. LOL!
Donna, LOL. The older I get the more I enjoy them. The cardinals are one of my favorite and in the winter I get to see 2 pair of them. Thanks.
