With all the noise online, on TV, on your car radio, screaming and yell - save 40%, 15 minutes can save you 15%, nobody beats XXXXX insurance - who do you trust? Insurance - particularly car insurance - is being sold on price alone.
Yet, I see every day the errors and mistakes people are making with their auto insurance - in New York State.
Consumer's thinking all insurance coverage is the same, except for price. Let me tell you a quick story : One of our clients parked his car and was walking across the street to his families restaurant. Still in the roadway, a driver came along and hit him with such force, it flipped him 20 feet in the air. What followed was a coma and a 3 month hospital stay....until he succumbed and died to the injuries. Well this at-fault driver had low limits of liability on his auto insurance policy. So we had to look at our clients insurance policy to pay claims under his uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
So some of the costs our client incurred were paid by his own auto insurance - supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. In New York, this limit minimum is $25,000 each person/$50,000 each accident. We had $250,000/$500,000 of coverage for our client.
If this S.U.M. coverage does NOT match your liability limits in New York, your agent doesn't have your best interest at heart! He or she is looking out for the insurance companies best interest, so as to not pay claims when not at fault!
Look at your policy - if your liability limits are $100,000/$300,000 (what your insurance would pay in a your-fault accident), your S.U.M. limits should be $100,000/$300,000 - what YOU would collect from an under or un-insured motorist who is at-fault! If you don't have this, you should fire that agent.
That is why auto insurance shouldn't be bought on price alone - it is too easy to cut corners and NOT give the consumer the proper protection.
