The George Washington Masonic National Memorial
I used to pass this monument all the time when I worked "in town" and never really understood much about it. Thought I'd share something I learned from my friend Pat Kennedy in DC.
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial sits at the top of Shooters Hill in Alexandria, Virginia - a spot that was once the choice of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison for the new nation's capitol building. Instead, it serves as a memorial to the man who is perhaps American's most famous Mason.
The Memorial is 9-stories tall, and you can see it from much of the city of Alexandria. I took this photo facing west on King Street. For a long time, the Memorial was a work in progress. They laid the cornerstone in 1932, but didn't complete the spectacular interior until 1970.
It's easy to get to the Washington Masonic National Memorial. The building is a few blocks from the King Street Metro, and there are driving directions on the website.
