I am now soid on keeping the area over your kitchen cabinets clear of clutter, especially if you are a home owner getting ready to sell. Packing up and clearing your clutter in the kitchen is a great place to start when getting ready to list your home! Sharon Tara , a home stager from New Hampshire, wrote the blog below and included some amazing before and after photos to show you how much the appearance changes when you reduced that clutter on top of those cabinets!

Do you want to reduce the clutter in your kitchen?

The area over the cabinets is a great place to start.

It's common for people to decorate over their cabinets.  All kinds of things are put up there....pottery, baskets, signs, plates, bowls, tea pots, all kinds of wildlife, and probably the most common.....fake plants.

stuff over cabinets

Personally....I'm not a fan.

Adding fake plants and decorative pieces above the cabinets clutters a kitchen.

It's not decor to me..... it's dust-collecting, greasy, glorified clutter.

If your house is NOT on the market and you love stuff above the cabinets and it makes you smile, go for it!

If your house IS on the market, clearing away the clutter will improve the appearance of your kitchen and it's appeal to buyers.   Potential buyers are easily distracted.  Items on top of the cabinets in MLS pictures take the focus off more important features.

You don't want eyes wandering to the top of the picture, you want them focused on the center!

Terrie.

Great post and reminders for us all.  What we like isn't always a "Buyer" like or love.
