Happy Thanksgiving        I want to extend Thanksgiving wishes to everyone in MoCo. I hope you have a wonderful feast with family and friends, and a great Holiday Season this year. I hope you enjoy these fun facts about our most American of holidays!

William Bradford, leader of the Plymouth Pilgrims, organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast, who had taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. This first feast last for three days. It is believed that some of the food included, rabbit, chicken, lobster, fish, chestnuts squash, dried fruit, onions, leeks radishes, cabbage and carrots, as well as eggs, goat cheese, honey and maple Syrup.

Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, spent 17 years writing letters to mayors, governors and presidents, trying to get an official Thanksgiving Day celebration declared. She wanted to provide the American people with a sense of home and family with our own holiday, to counteract the new fast paced, industrial life that was dominating the world at large. Eventually, she was able to persuade President Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. He issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.

Today, turkey has become the most popular main dish at Thanksgiving. This happened because of one iconic moment in American publishing. In 1943, The Saturday Evening Post released an issue with a Norman Rockwell painting on the cover entitled “Freedom From Want”. This painting depicting an “ideal” American family serving turkey at a feast set the stage for the future popularity of the bird as the main course for Thanksgiving. No other dish has been able to replace America’s love of turkey at this time of year.
