"Wiring is not a Hobby. Call an Electrician." says the well-known bumper sticker. The owner of this house obviously never heard that, as these shocking photographs reveal!
The first example is a do-it-yourself outlet for a window air conditioner.
"No outlet? No problem! We'll just run a wire from somewhere else and install an outlet. No outlet cover? We'll just leave it off."
In the photo, I unplugged the AC unit so that you can see the detail. This is located at floor level. Can you imagine a young child sticking his or her finger into that outlet box? Notice also the black burn mark on the stud. That was caused by heat or sparks!
The second example is an outlet inside the master bedroom closet.
The Owners wanted a wall-mounted television to watch while in bed. They hung the rack for the TV on the wall next to the closet. They then drilled a hole in the wall and pulled a wire through it.
"No outlet, no problem. We'll run a wire from somewhere and add our own outlet. What do you mean, we have no electric tape? Who cares; we can use masking tape."
Notice also that they cut off the grounding wire to make this a 2-prong ungrounded electric circuit!
These illegally wired outlets could cause an electrocution. Either outlet could result in a whole house fire.
Were such a tragedy to occur, Investigators from the Fire Department and/or the Insurance Company would discover the illegal wiring. This could be grounds for a denial of any Insurance claim.
Friends, you can buy electrical wire and components at Lowe's, Home Depot, even Walmart. But if you are not an experienced electrician, you are doing something that is very dangerous and potentially fatal!
Like the bumper sticker says, "Wiring is not a Hobby. Call an Electrician."
Personal note by the blog author: I spent 4 years as a high-voltage electric power lineman during the 1970's.
