Horsey Friday Fun Facts - Benefits Of Horseback Riding

Did you know that horseback riding has many benefits?  It is much more than sitting on a horse.  Riding does burn calories, but there are more benefits than that.

Horseback riding:

-  Improves co-ordination

-  Improves your sense of well-being and develops your alertness

-  Having a good riding posture strengthens the spine and increases joint mobility

-  Stimulates the internal organs.  Aids liver function and digestion.

-  Improves physical and mental conditions with abled and disabled people

-  Allows you to become mentally in tune with your horse.  They can be quite a friend to you in time of stress who will not judge nor tell your secrets

-  Stimulates the hormone called Seratonin, which is a natural mood enhancer, which leads to a feeling of well-being during and after riding

-  Boosts the cardiovascular system

-  Prevents muscle cramps

-  Connects you spiritually to your horse

Brigita,

Thank you for posting.  I haven't been horseback riding in more than 30 years.  I may need to try it again.

Wayne & Jean:

I do suggest trying it again.  In addition to the benefits I listed, it gets you out into nature and for some reason, the worries and problems seem to disappear while riding.  The best stress reliever I have found.

Having grown up with horses, I completely agree with all of this. And if you don't believe it's a total body workout, just saddle, ride for a few hours, unsaddle, and groom and see how you feel in the morning! Thanks for the great reminder. Horseriding is a rich man's sport here in Southern California but I love that I can walk by the stables that border the park and smell the leather.

Just about anything thing can be a good form of exercise. Horseback riding works muscles that don't typically get worked too.

Good post, Brigita. You point out some facts about horses that indicate that horses are great for the mind, body and spirit. I grew up with horses and couldn't agree with you more.

Riding and working with horses does give you a total workout.  I prefer this to the gym . . . . and it's free.

You are so right about that.  I do a total workout every morning and when I ride, I feel the muscles that have not been worked.
