The REAL Purpose of QR Codes

By
Real Estate Agent with NEPTUNE REALTY 0225-075558

The REAL Purpose of QR Codes has been lost on most of the real estate industry, but that's ok.  I'm going to explain what they are for and why you want to use them.  Most agents (as well as many other well intentioned but misguided business people) use QR codes to direct people to a website.  With site statistics, you are able to see how many people came to you through that door, but that misses the whole point of a QR code.

QR Codes were invented for the auto parts industry.  Now picture it, a warehouse full of parts you can hold in your hand on shelves and in bins.  But who is grabbing these parts?  Mechanics.  Well since their hands are nearly as clean as a surgeon's, what could go wrong?  Oh, they have grease on their hands at times?  Well, bar codes could get damaged and become unreadable, enter the QR code.  The actual "message" is written in the diagram 7 times (I may be wrong on the count, but it's a redundancy thing) which means 2 of the messages, the part description in this instance, could become damaged, but the QR reader can still get the correct info because of the other 5 times it's imprinted in that block.  This is why you sometimes see a logo embedded in the center and yet  the message still gets through.  So a QR Code is a means of communicating data with built-in redundancy for increased accuracy of the message.

Think of the QR code as a different language.  It's a language our phones and tablets all speak fluently.  So now, what message should we send in this new communication method?  Well, everyone wanted to use it for URL's, so you can send prospects to your website, but that misses the boat on where they really bring value.  Check out Zebra Crossing's QR Code Generator to start realizing the power of this tool.  URL's are only one thing they can do for you.  Click on the drop-down to see other preformatted types you can create.  If you are holding an open house and print invitations for the neighbors with a QR Code for the open house on it, you have now given the recipient a way to quickly and accurately ADD THAT EVENT TO THEIR CALENDAR.  Now how much more likely do you suppose that person is to show up at your open house?  You'll see from the site they can also be used for numerous other preformatted messages.

Scan these with your phone and see what options you have BUILT IN (the buttons at the bottom) now start thinking outside the box and see how many other useful ways these can help you build your business.

As you see, the more complex your "message" the more crowded your resulting QR code.  But this is the best way to use amazing technology that already exists in the hands of most consumers.  Try it out!

I agree that they never became as popular as you would think they'd be. It's like the novelty wore off.

QR codes remind me of the beta wars in the 1980's. They just never caught on. They are ugly.

Drick, I am a big fan of QR codes and have used them to drive thousands of views to my YouTube channel and they are a great addition to help leverage our print marketing and turn them into traffic and leads to our mobile sites.

Marie, that's a great idea on the back of a business card. You could get more complex and add company name or a description of your specialties. Wouldn't want that extra detail on a QR going on a sign, but since the person is holding it when they are scanning, more complex is fine. Thanks for the comment.

Marc, Jill, Jeffrey, because most people didn't realize how to exploit the technology for strategic advantage they appeared to be novelty.  However, as more people realize the true potential, they are gaining in popularity. Ugly doesn't matter, it's just faster data entry. Thanks for the comments.

Sam, glad to hear you like them and are using them in beneficial ways for data entry of a URL destination. Consider using the other types like calendar events, text messages, or contact cards. Thanks for the comment.

Mark, the VQRLabs approach is interesting.  I personally do not like short url's to my contact data because many of us are still reluctant to follow a link to an unknown destination for risk of corrupting our device.  I would rather just provide the actual data right there. It also gives the advantage of someone being able to read and process a QR code without even having a connection to the internet. (Anytime it's all local, the data transfer is faster than if it has to reach out to a cloud or server somewhere to come back with the answer.)  Although your approach allows data to change later and the old QR still works, I prefer the faster processing of local data. I'm sure there are many who will like your approach.  (And I do like the embedded picture, it's certainly prettier than the basic monochrome.)  Either way, the QR code is a fantastic means for quick and ACCURATE data entry, no matter what the data may be. Thanks for the comment.

Drick , Thanks for the history lesson and explanation. For the people who do not get not get it, that's unfortunate. Not sure why the animosity over a simple tool that people can use, if they want, its just something else that people can use to spread the word about themselves, and if someone wants to partake, then fine, if not? have a great day.

Didn't know the origins and about the built-in redundancy (cool - I'll hafta tinker with my logo now). I like the "Contact me. My name is____" idea you used. Might steal that idea....

I think the negatives regarding QR codes is coming from those who did not understand the real usefulness of the codes.

I have over 50 listings and I find the QR code quite useful. Many of my listings are in remote areas, so a cell phone is a good way [possibly the only way] to get a connection to someone who is "at the listing." If someone is looking at one of my remote listings they are already partially qualified. I want to connect with them specifically at that time to give them more information. A QR code is a step at being able to do that.

Shooting a QR code is far easier than typing a URL, especially in a smart phone.

Bryan, agreed. Thanks for the comment.

Travis, always happy to share a useful idea, glad you apreciated it. Open your QR in a photo editor and drop your logo or picture as a small box on top.  Make sure it is positioned a little South of center and a little East of center (there are control lines that run top to bottom and left to right  near the center and you can't interrupt them or it doesn't work.)  Then scan with phone to make sure it's working before you save your new improved QR. Play with it to make sure it reads correctly and have fun. Thanks for the comment.

John, you are absolutely right. Thanks for the comment.

Randy, glad you appreciated it. Thaks for the comment.

I think when they first hit our real estate world it was a must have. Think the world has faded from that. Don't hear much about QR Codes lately.

Bill, I think as more people start to recoginze the strength of QR as a data entry means, it will drive more to use them.  There simply is no substitute that is universally available and easy to use.  Thanks for the comment.

Re/Max gives us a QR that directs people to our website I haven't started putting it on my card yet,  I guess its time.  We can also produce one for each listing but if I put it on my flyer why do I need a QR with the same info?

Doris, think of the QR as another language. It is the native language of your device that lets a user quickly capture and store your contat info, a URL for a listing, or a preformatted text message to you.  It says the same thing as what's on your card or something different, but it's just another way of saying it. Glad you'll start using them. Thanks for the comment.
