Consider The New Google Prototype Car When Buying a Home

Think it doesn't matter? Consider this;

the Washington DC area is ranked #1 in the country for traffic congestion

Every home buyer in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC considers their daily commute when buying a home. In fact, houses for sale near Metro and in the city are priced higher and sell faster than homes in outlying suburbs. So how, exactly, will the Google Prototype Car change the way we live and work? The car can drive itself. The car will follow instructions and move people and goods around much like a taxi or chauffeur driven vehicle.

If you let yourself "go with this" you can imagine getting to and from work, picking up kids after school and grocery shopping with ease. No need to pay parking fees or coordinate the family schedule when everyone can get around on their own. If you let your imagination go even further, you could consier the Google Prototype Car as a mobile office.

Perhaps a one or even two hour commute could be a productive part of your work day.

If you still find the concept of driverless cars unbelievable, consider that last November, Morgan Stanley   released a report on the economic benefits of driverless cars. Electric car company, Tesla, is working on driverless car tecnology. Their online forums are full of comments regarding driverless cars and the legal and safety issues. In fact, several major auto manufacturers are researching self driving cars and the impact these vehicles will have on how we interact and live our daily lives.

Back in the old days, we made a phone call from home, work or a phone booth. When was the last time you saw a phone booth?

How quickly we forget

Communication was vastly different just a few decades ago

So why not driverless cars? It may not change our home buying habits right now but in a few decades automated vehicles may be as common as a cellphone.

Interesting... I have a hard time picturing myself in a driverless car on the freeway at 65+ mph.  These are for low speed tasks.  Pretty much a replacement for something like a golf cart??

Ever since I went to Disney Land as a kid, I've dreamed of driverless cars! MAYBE in my lifetime....!

Thanks Nelson! So far the prototypes are for lower speeds and the cars are very small much like a golf cart. In Germany and Spain autonomous cars have been tested in traffic. So far in the US, there are three states that are allowing these cars to be tested on the road.

Victoria and Marshall, I'm sure we will see driverless cars in the future. It won't help people in the suburbs as far as distance goes, but it would make commuting a whole lot easier.

Thank you Michael!

It will be interesting to see how this technology fits with the current traffic model. I know light rails and trolly cars have dedicated lanes. This might be the way autonomous cars are introduced to the public.

I am definitely ready for this car.  Think how much more focused we could be when we take clients on property tours if we don't have to think as much about driving and traffic.  Thanks for a fun blog and something for us all to look forward to in the future.

The commute on 495 is one of the worst I have experienced.

Hi Jeff,

I was a traffic reporter for many years before getting into real estate. You are right about 495 it truly is the worst drive. If you can avoid it during rush hour its a bit better  but that's just not possible for most people.

Thanks for commenting and keep in touch!

That's cool. I think driverless cars would be much more safe than ones with human drivers in it.lol

This paradigm shift in automotive and commuting industry will take some time, but when google cars are the norm, people may be less reluctant to live in the suburbs.. However, I would rather work at home or near by. I've been on commuter buses, trains, planes, vans and cars.. all of them took time away from home and work regardless if it was driverless or had a driver. However if that commuter train comes with music, that is a different story all together.... click here to see the Copenhagen metro that does!

My how the times are a changin'. I remember when cell phones first came out, and now everyone has a 'smart phone'  that has hundreds of thousands of available apps for it.

I guess we are moving towards 'smart cars' at this point. Many already have cameras, internet, monitors, GPS, phone, can park themselves and start themselves, etc.

Bill Ford, the great grandson of Henry Ford, gave a great TED talk about the future of cars, traffic and gridlock. Kind of cool hearing what the head guy of Ford has to say about smart cars and the new technology we will all be using in the next few years.

Thanks for stopping by:)
