Shoes, boots, sneakers...where do they come from??

What I mean is on the road.

Photos are from a website selling a book called Shoes on the Highway...it is a play used in schools. Believe it or not, this did not prompt me to write this, I just found it when I was looking for some clip art!!!

In my nearly 15 years of appraising and doing a lot of road time, I have always been amazed at how many shoes, boots and sneakers are on the roads...am I crazy or has anyone else ever noticed this??

I am perplexed by this...do people throw them out the window while driving?? Is so, why?? Are they evidence in a crime scene?? My mind goes wild when I am driving along seeing these lonely old shoes...

Any ideas out there??

Patrice - When I use to commute lon distant I would see all types of items on the road including shoes and clothing and wondered how they got there. All kind of thoughts came to me also.

I often ponder about things like shoes on the side of the road, skid marks, graffitti on the sides of box cars, wildlife that make their home next to the freeway and decide to venture across it (often one time too many), wondering if those little shacks are actually inhabited, those depressing cross markers and farms that have acres and acres of land, but the house is 10 feet off the highway... These are just some of the reasons I love rural appraisals :-)

Sandra, Yes, I was going to take some pictures of them but they are more obvious as to why they are there...the shoes on the road is a mystery to me...thanx
