Key Box Etiquette

By
Real Estate Agent with Windermere Real Estate

I don't beg often, but I think this is worth it.  For those agents who work in areas that have condos please, please, please go out and invest in a few id tags for you lock boxes.  It is really painful to be out previewing with a client and you come to a row of lock boxes outside a condo complex with 5 lock boxes.  Some indicate what unit they are for and some do not.  You have to pop all of the boxes and take all to the keys inside.  It makes us look bad in front of clients and doesn't help buyers be in any better of a mood when they arrive at your unit.

One other thought for buyers agents.  Please be considerate of other agents.  Don't just take all the keys for a complex and then disappear for an hour.  I know it is a pain in the butt to return the keys to the boxes between showings, but at least don't wander down to the cabana and check out the pool while other agents are waiting to view a unit.

Maybe for listings that are empty, listing agents may want to consider two sets of keys in the lock box.  That way if another agent comes during a showing the second agent can still get in.  Or at least a lobby key where appropriate so that another agent and clients can wait out of the rain.

We are all in this thing together.  A little courtesy goes a long way.

PS - Can you tell it's raining here.  Man am I grumpy.  Must need another latte.
