Love Where You Live - Wilmington, NC

Here are 10 reasons why we, The Cameron Team, love Wilmington, North Carolina!

1. The History! Records show that European explorers made their first mark on the Wilmington area during the 16th century, but it wasn't permanently settled until the 1720s. From there it grew to become a thriving port city with an important role during the American Civil War (read more here). Wilmington has a beautiful historic district. Many of the original homes and buildings have been preserved/restored, and you can even take a horsedrawn carriage to tour the area. It's charming and a wonderful reminder of our country's past.

2. The Beach! Surfing, paddle boarding, swimming, fishing, scuba diving...Wilmington borders Wrightsville Beach and Pleasure Island (Carolina Beach and Kure Beach). 30 minutes away is Topsail Beach. If you have a boat, you can reach even more sand. The beach is the best therapy there is and there's so much to do there!

3. The Intracoastal Waterway! Not only do we have beaches for enjoying water, but we have the Intracoastal Waterway, a protected ribbon of water great for boating. You don't even need to go out to the ocean!

4. The Food Scene! There is such a wide and diverse food scene in the Wilmington area that you could eat somewhere different every night of the week, all year long, and still have something new to try. We even have a local 'Top Chef' contestant and the winner of Rachel Ray's Great American Cookbook Challenge.

5. The Theater Community! Trying to choose a play to see is just about as difficult as choosing a movie to watch - there are so many choices in this city! In one weekend, you can see classic Shakespeare, improv, and a modern musical. There are some very talented people in Wilmington, so many that they hold an annual awards show at the historic Thalian Hall, North Carolina's oldest operating theater.

6. The Art Scene! There are numerous art galleries around Wilmington, including the Cameron Art Museum, which hosts travelling exhibitions and has an art school. The Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, and the Wilmington Art Association help to bring local artists together to earn them recognition for their work. You can see everything from handmade jewelry to large sculptures, some of which are displayed around downtown.

7. The Weather! Sure, it's a bit cold right now. It IS February. But we can see warm weather in Wilmington 10 months out of the year and if it's raining, stick around. It won't be long before we see the sun again. Heck, there are even days in the summer when it's raining AND sunny at the same time!

8. Startups! Wilmington isn't just for tourists. It's also become an incubator for business startups. Some of those include Next Glass, mimijumi, nCino, Entitle, and more! We're lucky to be surrounded by such innovators.

9. Quality Higher Education! Wilmington is home to a branch of the University of North Carolina and  award winning Cape Fear Community College. There are also a number of smaller continuing education/trade schools. You don't need to go very far to get a good education!

10. THE PEOPLE! We have quite a mix of backgrounds here in Wilmington, but no one can deny the existence of true Southern hospitality. Need a helping hand and a smiling face, it'll be there! All you need to ask!

Of course, there's more to love about Wilmington, but we've got homes to sell! If you have any questions about the area, just let us know!
